B+O Architecten has designed a small-scale care centre at the former location of the Remonstrant church in the centre of Meppel. The characteristic façade of the church, including the bells, has been preserved. The façade gives an authentic character to the building, as well as showcasing a certain time in the Meppel architecture. The rest of the building has been rebuilt and provides a home to 24 elderly people who need care.

In the design, the sacred church area is reflected in the shape of the courtyard garden, which the residents look out on from the two floors. The first floor has been designed in such a way that the elderly can walk around there. This way, they will keep moving.

On the first and second floors, the residents have their own bed and bathroom. Each group, consisting of six people, shares a common living room. Three partner apartments have been realised on the ground floor, allowing partners to stay together longer and not having to let each other go when one of the two needs care. The central location in the centre of the village also ensures that the elderly remain a part of the inner city society.

In addition, the residents receive plenty of personal attention thanks to the small-scale setup. All these elements give the care centre a very humane character.
